PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND POSTER
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from the ?Preservation Hall? which is located in the French Quarter, just three blocks from the Mississippi River. The Hall has served many functions over the years. Originally built as a private residence in 1750, the hall has evolved from inn, photo studio, art gallery and tavern.
Preservation Hall opened its doors in 1961 as a sanctuary to protect and honor New Orleans Jazz. Many of the band's charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early twentieth century including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Kid Ory and Bunk Johnson.
Though personnel of the band change from time to time as members age, some of the earliest members (probably the charter members) are in this print: Percy and Willie Humphrey and Narvin Kimball are known to be in this print, and it is believed that Chester Zardis is the bass player. The piano player is not identified, but is probably Joseph Robichaux.
